Meet The Long’s

Hello and welcome to our blog, I’m Philippa a 28 year old mother and stepmother to six wonderful children who we raise in Berkshire, United Kingdom.

Aplatefor8 started out with a very different goal in mind, Michael and I gave birth to our sixth child in June 2017. A baby girl who we named Thea, at five weeks old we realised something was seriously wrong and it wasn’t just the usual baby stuff they had lead us to believe. We had a frightful discovery that  Thea has a Congenital Heart Disease called Tetralogy of Fallots and was currently struggling to get enough oxygen around her body. At 7 weeks old our baby girl was critical and fighting desperately for her life and an emergency theater space.

While confined to the hospital room, lonely and away from my family and other children I began to document the struggles of being a CHD mum on our Instagram page @aplatefor8.

Today Thea runs around with all of her siblings despite her heart condition and awaits further surgery. Although she may need to take life a little slower than her peers there is no stopping Thea and our family.

As a large family we get questioned on a regular basis how we keep our shopping bill ridiculously low and yet eat healthy. So since Thea’s surgery the Instagram page has bloomed into a page for sharing meal ideas and documenting weekly shops for low prices with the an insight into how a large families lives and the odd mum hack here and there.

Pssst! I want to tell you a secret!

Pssst! I want to tell you a secret!

Okay, well it’s not really a secret infact we all know it, but how many of us actually use it?

But before I share it, let me pose a question.

What do you spend approximately on shopping a week? Under £100 ? Over? Maybe £200?

With that figure in mind, I now want you to think about how easy you find it to control what you spend. Those times you are shopping whilst hungry and those foods you never usually buy end up in a trolley, £30 at petrol station as you are running low on milk.. we are all culprits.

As a family of 8 our shopping bills can spiral out of control very easily without anything really to show for it.

Now for the secret. What if I said I want to try and help you reduce your shopping bills.

I want to share with you how we save money, shop smart and eat well, all through shared meal planning, shopping lists, discounts and more.

Sounds good? Well let’s jump to it!
